Golf carts don't look like demanding machines, but their batteries work harder than you'd think. Between steep grass slopes, heavy loads, and blazing summer heat, a typical 48V system takes a real beating every single day.
Most carts still run on flooded lead-acid—usually six 8V batteries wired in series for 48V.
Pros: Cheap upfront ($600–$900), easy to repair, forgiving if accidentally drained.
Cons: Very heavy (~650 lbs), short lifespan (2–3 years with daily deep cycling), requires monthly maintenance (adding distilled water).
The killer: Heat and deep discharge. Run it to empty every day and skip the water checks, and the pack will be done in 18 months.
More courses are switching to lithium iron phosphate every year.
Pros: Half the weight (~300 lbs), lasts 6–8 years (2,000–3,000 cycles), zero maintenance, more usable capacity per charge.
Cons: Higher upfront cost ($1,200–$1,800), requires a compatible lithium charger (old lead-acid chargers won't work safely).
Lithium costs about twice as much on day one, but it outlasts lead-acid by 3×. Over five years, lithium almost always wins on total cost because you're not buying two or three replacement lead-acid sets.
Don't run it dead. Recharge at 20–30% remaining.
Beat the heat. Park in the shade during breaks; high temps silently halve battery life.
Finish the charge. Lead-acid needs a full 8-hour cycle to equalize cells. Cutting it short every day causes permanent capacity loss.
Lead-acid is fine if you want the lowest upfront price and don't mind getting your hands dirty with maintenance. Lithium is the better long-term bet for anyone who wants a cart that just works, year after year, with no fuss.
